WASHINGTON – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced Tuesday that he will seek re-election to the Senate in 2024, when he will be 82 years old.

Sanders, the longest-serving independent in congressional history, has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration and has pledged to continue fighting for progressive causes such as Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and a wealth tax.

"I am running for re-election to the United States Senate because I believe that we need to continue fighting for the working families of this country," Sanders said in a statement. "We need to build an economy that works for all, not just the wealthy few. We need to protect our democracy from the forces of authoritarianism. And we need to address the existential threat of climate change."

Sanders' announcement comes as Democrats are facing an uphill battle to maintain control of the Senate in 2024. Republicans need to flip just one seat to regain the majority, and Democrats are defending several seats in states that Trump won in 2020.

Sanders' re-election bid is likely to be closely watched as a test of the strength of the progressive movement within the Democratic Party. Sanders has been a leading voice for the progressive wing of the party, and his re-election would be a sign that the movement remains a force to be reckoned with.
