An Overview Of The Struggles

Deonte Banks is The Key to the New York Giants' Secondary

An overview of the struggles

After a rough joint practice session with the New York Jets, the New York Giants' secondary has come into the spotlight, being exposed as a potential vulnerability for the team.

Recently, the Giants' defense has been underwhelming, and many are pointing to the secondary, the last line of defense on the football field, as a key reason.

With the new season approaching quickly though there may be hope on the horizon as cornerback Deonte Banks enters his second NFL season.

The Potential Solution: Deonte Banks

Banks' Role

Selected with the 26th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Giants are likely counting on the young cornerback to live up to his draft status as he enters year two in the NFL.

The departure of James Bradberry has left an opening in the Giants' secondary that the organization hopes Banks can fill, after an underwhelming performance last year.

With the addition of pass rusher Brian Burns, the pressure should be relieved on the secondary somewhat, though Banks will still have to improve his game.

Banks' Development

If the former third-team AP All-American from the University of Maryland can show the development he is expected to, he has the potential to completely turn the Giants' secondary around.

Banks is a natural athlete with an impressive skillset, and has been showing progress throughout the offseason to Giants coaching staff.

If he can bring that same level of play to the regular season, he could form a formidable tandem with Adoree' Jackson on the outside.

Impact on the Giants Defense

The Giants' defense is in desperate need of a boost following a poor 2022 season in which they allowed the third-most passing touchdowns in the NFL.

Should Banks flourish during this upcoming season, it would dramatically improve the Giants' defense as a whole, and could take the pressure off of a young pass rushing unit.

The Giants defense is counting on a big year from the young cornerback, and with continued development, he could be the key to a much-needed turnaround.
