Marcello Hernandez, Humboldt County's First Latino Supervisor, Passes Away at 70.

Family and colleagues remember him as a dedicated public servant.

Marcello Hernandez dedicated his life to making Humboldt County a better place.

Marcelino “Marcello” Hernandez, who dedicated over 20 years to Humboldt County as the first Latino supervisor, passed away on July 14, 2023. He was 70.

Hernandez emigrated from Mexico to the United States as a young child and grew up in Humboldt County. After graduating from high school, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

After returning home, Hernandez became involved in local politics, and in 1992, he was elected to the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors. He served five terms, making him the longest-serving Latino supervisor in the county’s history.

During his time on the board, Hernandez was a strong advocate for social justice, environmental protection, and economic development. He was also a vocal supporter of immigrant rights and worked to make Humboldt County more welcoming to newcomers.

Hernandez was known for his dedication to public service and his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. He was a role model for many and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire Humboldt County community.

Remembrances from family and colleagues

Hernandez’s family and colleagues have shared many fond memories of him since his death.

“Marcello was a true public servant,” said his wife, Maria Hernandez. “He always put the needs of his constituents first, and he worked tirelessly to make Humboldt County a better place for everyone.”

“Marcello was a great mentor and friend,” said former Humboldt County Supervisor Mark Lovelace. “He was always willing to share his knowledge and experience with others and had a positive impact on many lives.”

“Marcello was a true champion for social justice,” said Humboldt County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Virginia Bass. “He will be deeply missed.”

Hernandez's legacy

Hernandez’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched. He was a true pioneer who paved the way for other Latinos to serve in public office. He was also a dedicated advocate for the most vulnerable members of our community.

Hernandez’s passing is a great loss for Humboldt County, but his legacy will continue to inspire others to make a difference in the world.
